What is SUDC?
Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood
Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is the unexpected death of a child that remains unexplained, even after a full investigation.
In Ireland, 8 children aged 1–14 died from SUDC between 2019 and 2023, according to the most recent published data. While SUDC is rare, its impact is profound — families are left without answers, and there is little research or awareness in Ireland to help understand or prevent these tragedies.
Our charity is committed to raising awareness of SUDC, supporting bereaved families, and working toward a future where fewer parents face this unimaginable loss.
